New Malden Garden Landscaping

We brought natural stone, fresh turf and new timber fencing together for this garden landscaping project in New Malden. With a generous patio beside the house and a lawn extending towards the rear boundary, the finished garden balances space for outdoor dining with an open green area to enjoy.

BH Gardens supplied and laid Indian sandstone paving around the conservatory and beneath the existing pergola. The stone’s mix of warm gold, buff and soft grey tones complements the brickwork, while its natural variations give the patio character.

A sandstone circle adds a distinctive focal point within the paving. Its curved pattern breaks up the rectangular layout, introducing a decorative feature without needing a separate terrace. We fitted the paving around the existing pergola posts and retained the climber, keeping these established features part of the garden.

Beyond the patio, we laid a new lawn, creating a broad sweep of green framed by the garden’s borders. The clear junction between paving and grass defines the two areas, with space for seating close to the house and room to enjoy the lawn beyond.

We also supplied and installed new 6ft high feather edge fencing along the rear and side boundaries. The overlapping timber boards provide screening and a consistent backdrop for the planting, while the concrete posts and gravel boards give the boundary a neat, substantial finish.

Together, these improvements give the garden a more cohesive appearance. The natural stone brings texture and warmth, the lawn softens the space, and the fencing creates a sense of enclosure without competing with the surrounding greenery.

This New Malden project shows how updating the main elements of a garden can bring the whole space together, while retaining existing features that already give it character.

Frequently asked questions

Can a sandstone circle be incorporated into a rectangular patio?

Yes. As this project shows, we can incorporate a circular feature within a larger area of rectangular paving. It introduces a contrasting pattern while keeping the surface continuous and usable. We plan its position and the surrounding cuts so it feels part of the overall design.

How much maintenance does an Indian sandstone patio need?

We recommend regular sweeping and occasional cleaning with a product suitable for natural sandstone. Clearing fallen leaves and dealing with spills promptly helps reduce staining. Shaded areas may need more attention to control algae. We advise avoiding harsh acids and aggressive pressure washing, which can damage the stone or joints

How soon can we use a newly laid lawn?

We recommend keeping foot traffic to a minimum until the turf has rooted firmly into the soil below. This often takes a few weeks, although weather and growing conditions affect the timing. During establishment, watering should keep the turf and underlying soil moist without becoming waterlogged. We can advise when it is ready for its first mow.

What are the benefits of feather edge fencing with concrete posts and gravel boards?

The overlapping boards create a closely screened boundary, making feather edge fencing a practical choice where privacy matters. Concrete posts provide durable support, while gravel boards separate the timber from direct soil contact, helping reduce exposure to ground moisture. In this garden, the combination also creates a consistent backdrop along the newly fenced boundaries.
